It’s really winter now. We’re talking single-digit morning, long johns under your leggings winter here. And also stuck inside going stir crazy and the kids are bouncing off the walls winter. Already. So much pent up energy. Already! (And I’m not talking about me – THEM! They siphon it, it would seem, huh?).

So here’s one solution that we’re working on to beat the winter blahs and blehs and BAAAAH! – swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim School.

When my kid can’t be running around outside, splashing around inside is turning out to be a pretty great alternative. Two weeks ago he just so happened to be the only one in his class – lap after lap after lap – and man did he sleep well that night! But even when it is a full class, there are only four kids to every teacher so he still gets plenty of time moving in the water.

If you’re envisioning blue lips and goosebumps, you’ve got it all wrong. It’s a really nice 90 degrees in the water and nice and warm all around the pool deck. You and your kid will be comfortable.

• Perpetual lessons. Once your kid masters the skills of his or her level, onward and upward it is. No need to wait around for a new session to begin. And the front desk staff is fantastic about working to accommodate your schedule and find a class and instructor that will be the best fit.

• Makeup lessons aplenty. With winter comes the crud, so when that strikes, stay home. But don’t worry about missing your lesson – you get 12 makeups a year.

• It’s not just another activity. It’s a life skill! It’s something that they’ll always use – knowing how to be safe in and around the water. By the time spring break rolls around, I’m thinking we will have totally graduated from the floaties. I’m certainly envisioning our first summer without water wings!

Plus, if you’re looking for a family activity in the winter, Goldfish offers various family swim times and events. The whole crew can take advantage of the 90-degree water, get moving, burn off some energy (not you – again, the kids – because like most moms, I have SO much energy to spare, right?) and have some family fun. It’s also a good way for the kiddos to practice and show off their new skills. Members even get to swim free during the daytime and it’s only $5 per person/$15 family max for the Friday night events. Nonmembers pay the $5/$15 for each time (but still a great deal – can’t do the movies or bowling or bouncing for that!).
