Goldfish: Building Confident Swimmers and Parents

This post was sponsored by Goldfish Swim School – Dublin and Goldfish Swim School – Westerville, but all the opinions expressed here are totally my own.

For a few months now I’ve been raving about all there is to love when it comes to Goldfish Swim School. There really is so much wonderful stuff to tell you, and every time I’m there, I’m honestly so impressed by what a top-notch operation they run. I truly cannot say it enough.

I was trying to decide what wonderful aspect I could share with you all this time around, and as I was telling this story to a friend, I realized I had my post (See? I really do talk it up to everyone!).

Earlier this month, my little one was invited to a swimming party. Oh great, I thought. I get to put on a bathing suit in January (my husband took one for the team at the last swimming party the kids went to; it was my turn). So I suited up, piling several layers of clothes over top, because, you know, winter.

While I did have every intention of at least wading into the water with my kid, I thought I’d give it a few minutes of keeping an eye on him from the edge. As I watched him — even though I’d been watching him for ages at lessons — I was really in awe of how effortlessly he was moving in the water. He stayed in an area he could touch (roped off from the area he couldn’t), but he’d go down the little slide and actually swim away at the bottom. Not walk, not paddle – full-on freestyle.

No more ‘monkey tree banana’ for this guy; we’ve graduated to full-on backstroke.

And then this happened:

“Is that your kid doing the backstroke?”

Why yes, yes it was. Hold on. WHAT? My preschooler was doing the backstroke just for kicks? That’s a new one! And he was actually doing the real deal backstroke!

Like I’ve said, I’ve seen him for months and months now making strides in the pool at Goldfish. Every week they update us on his progress, and I definitely see it. He can swim no doubt. But getting to see it out of the context of a lesson and in the application of real life made it even more evident that Goldfish has been a wonderful choice and investment for us. And I’m not going to lie – not having to fully submerge myself was GLORIOUS (I did dip my legs in – I wasn’t totally going to waste that shave).

He had a blast at that party — and I actually enjoyed it too! I didn’t take my eyes off him and I was constantly close by, but I was able to relax and enjoy watching him have a good, fun and safe time in the water.

I’m already looking forward to this summer’s trips to the pool (well, for various reasons, because, you know, winter)!

  1. Can you recommend a teacher? We had one good sub, but I’d like to have a back up option when we start one-on-one lessons there? Thanks!

    • Hi Ariane! They are all so good – it’s hard to go wrong. I have found that some kids click a little better with some teachers but that’s not something you know until you go for a bit. We have been going for a little over two years and I can honestly say I’ve never had a teacher that I wouldn’t want my child to have again.
