Columbus Mom’s Blog Guide to August 2017

Hello there August!

Summer isn’t over yet! Although there are many back to school events this month, we still have plenty of summer events to enjoy and places to explore!

The word of the month is FESTIVAL! There are numerous church festivals, food truck festivals, and outdoor events to put on your calendar this month!

Now onto the events. 🙂  

Events: August 1-6

August 1: For Kids: Go Fish: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Homstead Park | Learn the basics of fishing and then try to catch one! 

August 1-5: A Hunting we will go! : 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Slate Run Historical Farm | Pick a scavenger hunt at the entrance and explore all week long! 

August 1: Gahanna Night Out: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in Gahanna | Get to know your Gahanna police officers. while enjoying a night of live music, entertainment and family fun filled activities at Creekside Plaza!

August 1: Reading with a Firefighter: 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. | Join the Prairie Township Fire Department as they host reading with a firefighter. A firefighter will read some great books, while children and parents enjoy some snacks and refreshments.

August 1-August 6: The Ohio State Fair: Times vary each day at The Ohio Expo Center | Rides, Concerts, Unique Food and Vendors, a tradition you won’t want to miss! See their website for exact times of events. 

August 1: Movies by Moonlight at Easton: Movie begins at dusk until 10:30 p.m. | Enjoy Zootopia outside under the stars! 

August 2: Wild Story Time Turtles: 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Ohio Wildlife Center | Story time, followed by a craft to coordinate with the book! $5 per person and includes a visit with an animal ambassador and a walk around the grounds. 

August 2: Little Sprouts Book Club: 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at Hilliard United Methodist Preschool | In partnership with the Hilliard United Methodist Preschool, bring your lunch and join us this summer for stories with Miss Lindsay and friends, followed by fun times on the playground!

August 2: First Wednesday Marysville: 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. in Marysville | Uptown every first Wednesday of the month (May-October, excluding July) for an evening of fun! Gather with your friends and neighbors to visit local merchants, enjoy dinner at one of their many eateries, and rock out to live music from area musicians. First Wednesdays are a great way to kick back for a mid-week break!

August 2: Where the Wild Things Are: 9:00 p.m.-11:30 p.m. at Gateway | Let the wild rumpus start! The beloved children’s tale, Where the Wild Things Are, is screening in the plaza! In honor of all things wild, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will be here along with some of their furry friends! There will be 50 chairs provided to guests. Feel free to bring your own folding chairs or sit in the World of Beer outdoor patio.

August 3: Paws in the Plaza: 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Creekside Gahanna | Monthly event scheduled for the first Thursday of the month from April through October. All animal related vendors.

August 3: Rascal Flats at The Ohio State Fair: 7:00 p.m. at Celeste Theater | Get your tickets today!

August 3: Paddleboard Yoga at Worthington Pools: 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m | Add a little Zen with Jen on the paddle board doing some awesome yoga! There are 5 boards for rent or you can bring your own. Sign up online on the Worthington Pools website! Your core muscles will thank you as you have fun in the sun!

August 3: I’m no Dumby Ventriloquist: 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Homestead Park | Enjoy comedy Ventriloquist David Crone during this 1-hour performance. Sponsored by Giant Eagle. This highly popular program meets at the amphitheater located in the back of the park.

August 3: Nightlife 614 Genoa Park: 7:30 p.m.: Showing Bridesmaids at Genoa Park | Reserve your tickets and enjoy local food trucks while watching a movie! 

August 4- August 6: Back to School Tax-Free Shopping Days | Enjoy the Ohio Sales Tax Holiday! Happy shopping! 

August 4: Commons for Kids: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at The Columbus Commons | Our Friday morning focus is officially on the kids of Columbus.  Little people can give the carousel a whirl or hit the bounce-houses free of charge. We’ve got something for every kind of tyke with the Imagination Playground, Art Box, and a mammoth chess board that would make the Red Queen jealous. If Mother Nature cooperates (when the temperature is 80 degrees or above), we will feature an inflatable water slide and kid’s swimsuits are welcome.

August 4: KidX Club Dare to Design: 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Polaris Fashion Place | Is your child the next big fashion designer or runway star? Enjoy this KidX with a fashion show presented by A Kid Again. The Fashion Show will begin at 11 AM with designs from Buckle.

August 4- August 6th : St James Brats and Crafts Festival: 4:00 p.m-9:00 p.m. on Friday, Noon to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and Noon to 4:00 p.m. in Hilliard | Event includes live polka style music and dancing, authentic and homemade German table fare, beer wagon, arts and crafts fair and children’s games. 

August 4: Summer Nights Secret Life of Pets: 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at Zoombezi Bay | As the sun goes down, the Wild Tides Wave Pool turns into one cool aqua-theater as some of your favorite movies play on a jumbo screen.

August 4- August 6: Dublin Irish Festival: Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday until midnight. Saturday is 11 a.m.- midnight and Sunday is 11 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. in Dublin | For 29 years, the first weekend in August has been reserved for what is now the largest three-day Irish Festival on the planet! 30th anniversary! 

August 5-13: Maker Takeover at Worthington Place: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. at Worthington Mall | All of the storefronts in the mall will be OPEN and filled with incredible locally made items. Many of the pop-ups will be running promotions AND the kick-off celebration on August 5th will feature additional makers with tables throughout the mall.

August 5: FamJam at Commons: 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at The Columbus Commons | CDDC welcomes the Franklin County Children Services & Mayor Andrew J. Ginther’s FamJam! Come Downtown for a day of fun for the entire family! Get to know many community groups and organizations in a day filled with entertainment, youth performances, and more! Admission is free.

August 5: Back to School Expo: 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Easton Town Center | Send the kids back to school in style! Exhibitors will be on hand to provide resources and tips. Enjoy various entertainment on the event stage, enter to win giveaways, and much more, all during Ohio Sales Tax-Free Holiday weekend. 

August 6: Worthington Concerts on the Green: 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. on the Green| Enjoy The Ohio State Marching Band! 


Events: August 7-13

August 8: Movies by Moonlight : 8:30 p.m-10:30 p.m. at Easton | Moana showing tonight! 

August 9: Frosty Frog Event: 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. at Hilliard Park Station | Come beat the August heat with this FREE event! Enjoy ice cream from the Little Ice Cream Shoppe and splash with Fernando the Fountain Frog and more!

August 9: Mystery Night Out in Powell: 6:30 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. | Clues will be located throughout downtown Powell and lead participants back to Village Green Park for an evening of entertainment, food, and raffle prizes! 

August 10-12: Ohio Balloon Fest: 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at The Union County Airport | Hot Air Balloons, Kidz City (all you can jump), performances by Clint Black and so much more!

August 10: End of Summer Ice Cream Social: 6:30 p.m. at Orange Library | Join in for an end of summer celebration! 

August 11: Creekside Live: 6:00 p.m. at Creekside in Gahanna |   The event brings the community together celebrating the heart of Gahanna, the Creekside District. Come early and enjoy one of the many local restaurants. Onsite beverage sales available supported by the Gahanna Parks & Recreation Foundation, net proceeds support the Foundation’s focus on making Gahanna a great place to live, work and play.

August 11: Floating Flicks at Worthington Pools: 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. in Worthington | Come see a movie while floating on a raft! Fun for the whole family! 

August 11-12: St. Brendan Parish Festival: 6:00 p.m.-Midnight in Hilliard | Festival Raffle, Silent Auction, Festival Food, kids games, and rides! 

August 12: Powell Kidsfest: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Adventure Park | Come swim, bike, run, get soapy, bounce, and have great family fun at the 5th Annual Powell KidsFest!

August 12: Kidsfest in Groveport: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in Groveport | Come and enjoy Touch-A-Truck, Cops and Kids & Back to School all put together in one large community event. Kids activities, school supplies, animals, food and much more!

August 12: Children’s Learning Adventure Sneak Peak: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in Westerville | An opportunity to tour the facility and participate in a lot of family fun. The event is free and includes bowling, dancing, basketball, cooking demos, music, arts and crafts and more! 

August 12: Pre-K Story Time at Scioto Audobon: 10:00 a.m. -10:30 a.m. | A volunteer will read a nature based story and then play in the Forest room after! Story time is most Thursdays and Saturdays.

August 12: Concert in the Garden with the Shazzbots 10:30 a.m. at Weinlend Community Garden | The Shazzbots catchy and kid-friendly tunes will be on full display!

August 12: Family Fun with Mic and Max: 11:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m. (each 1 hour long) at Franklin Park Conservatory | Did you know that most macaws are endangered species? Meet Max, one of the Conservatory’s Blue and Gold Macaws, and join Conservatory horticulturalists, Liz and Evan, to learn about these amazing birds.

August 12: Super Hero Day: 11:00 am.-4:00 p.m. at Easton | Join us in Fenlon Square where you can unleash your super powers and come dressed as your favorite superhero, or even better, invent one! Enjoy a day of activities, including face painting, live music, surprise costumed characters, and more!

August 12-13: Festival Latino 2017: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at Genoa Park | Free family festival!

August 12: Shark Day at Highlands Pool: 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. at Highland Park Aquatic Center in Westerville | A shark at the pool means it is time to party. The day will include games every hour, face painting, water balloon toss, WIBIT inflatable obstacle course and a strong possibility of SHARKNADO in the weather forecast.

August 12: Super Hero Training (A Mother/Son Event): 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. at Licking County Family Y | Heroes will learn how to work with their Sidekicks (Mom) to complete training and save the Y from our villain.

August 12: 90’s Fest: TLC, Blackstreet Boys, and C & C Music Factory: 4:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at Columbus Commons | Who’s ready for a blast from the past and a night out?!

August 12: Columbus Crew Game: 7:30 p.m. at Columbus Crew Stadium | A fun experience with your family, come cheer on The Crew!  

August 13: Worthington Concerts on the Green: 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at The Worthington Green | Grab a blanket and join in the fun for a relaxing night of music on the green! 


Events: August 14-20

August 15: Movie by Moonlight: 8:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. at Easton | Showing SING tonight!  

August 17: Celebration at the Station: 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Hilliard Station | Come out for some family fun with food and music! 

August 18: Commons for Kids: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at The Columbus Commons | Our Friday morning focus is officially on the kids of Columbus.  Little people can give the carousel a whirl or hit the bounce-houses free of charge! Last one of the summer!

August 18-August 19: Columbus Food Truck Festival: 11:00 a.m.- 11:00 p.m. at The Scioto Mile | 65 food vendors, two stages with live music and lots of entertainment! 

August 18 and 19: St. Andrew’s Parish Festival: 5:00 p.m.- Midnight on Friday and Saturday | Inflatables, Bingo, Casino, Italian subs, and fun for the family! 

August 18: Blues and Brews: 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. in Marysville | Music, Food, and Family fun with music by WiIllie Phoenix. 

August 18: Cars (the movie) shown at Heritage Park | 9:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. in Westerville | Catch a movie on the side of the barn and under the stars!

August 19: Super Hero 5K: 8:15 a.m.-10:30 at Bull Run Columbus| 5K, 10K and kids fun run! Supports Nationwide Children’s hospital Ocean room.

August 19: Touch a Truck 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. at Polaris Mall | It’s time for another Touch-a-Truck! Sunny 95, Mr. Sunny, and all of your favorite BIG Trucks will be at Polaris Fashion Place! There will be trucks of all sizes – Fire trucks, dump trucks, even a pink truck, classic cruisin’ trucks and more will be there! Bring the whole family for cool trucks, cold treats, prizes, and fun!

August 19: End of Summer Luau: Fresh Thyme in Gahanna: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | Join Columbus Moms Blog for an End of Summer Luau! You’ll find a scavenger hunt, snacks, freshly squeezed juice, giveaways, a Fresh Thyme dietitian ready to discuss healthy meal ideas and a meet-and-greet with a Polynesian Princess!

August 19: Scratch Animal Masks at Franklin Park Conservatory: 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Franklin Park Conservatory | Scratch away a design to reveal a rainbow of color on a wearable animal mask. Free with admission.

August 19: CrestFest 2017: 12:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. in Clintonville | 8th annual Street Party in Clintonville!  

August 19: The British Invasion: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. in Hilliard | The musical group known as THE BRITISH INVASION covers the music from all your favorite English groups, from The Animals to The Zombies, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones!


Events: August 21-27

August 21: Solar Eclipse Viewing: 10:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. at COSI | Safely view the eclipse and also check COSI out at many Metroparks around the city for solar eclipse watch parties! 

August 22: Wild About Ohio Lecture:  6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. | $5 and free for Dublin residents. Come hear a lecture about the life of bees.

August 22: Movies by Moonlight: 8:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. at Easton | Showing Grease! 

August 24-26: St. Joan of Arc Festival: Powell, Ohio | Be sure to check their website for more information! 

August 25: 4th Friday in Westerville: 6:00 pm.-9:00 p.m | A night full of fun for the family in uptown Westerville. Shops open until 9!

August 25: Rhythm on the River: Balletmet: 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at Bicentennial Park | Rhythm on the River is a free performance series presented by Columbus Recreation and Parks!

August 25: Craft Brew at the Zoo: 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at The Columbus Zoo | 21 and older event- beer, live entertainment, and food and The Spin Doctors! 

August 26: Grandview Hop: 5:00 p.m- 9:00 p.m. in Grandview | Summertime street market and evening stroll! Restaurants and shops open late! 

August 26: Grass Head Planter at Franklin Park Conservatory: 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Franklin Park Conservatory | Decorate a pot with a funny face and plant it with grass seed “hair.” Take it home and watch it grow! $2 per craft.

August 26: Family Garden Yoga: 10:00 a.m. at Inniswoods Gardens | Practice your tree pose in a relaxing family setting! 

August 26: Back to School Community Fair: 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. in Grove City | Local organizations will provide free food, activities, haircuts, medical and dental screenings, school supplies, and more to get your family ready. This event is free to PK-4 families throughout the Grove City.  


Events: August 28-31

August 29: Movie by Moonlight: 8:30 p.m. -10:30 p.m. at Easton | Showing Rudy! 

August 30: Preschoolers: Bug Hunt: 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at Homestead Park| Explore the fascinating world of creepy crawlers!
