There’s a wide variety of fun family events at the Columbus Commons with a TON of free activities such as fitness classes, concerts, movie nights and the popular Commons For Kids happenings in the summer.  We’ll tell you more about the family-friendly events our writers experienced this summer at Columbus Commons and a list of upcoming events.

Commons For Kids

During the summer, Friday mornings are all about the kids at Columbus Commons.  The activities for each week change a little bit and include things like yoga classes, bounce houses, crafts and a twirl around the carousel. Special guests make appearances such as animals from the Columbus Zoo, balloon twisters and Ronald McDonald.

Here’s what one of our writers Julie had to say about her recent visit:

I took my kids to Commons for Kids on Friday and as soon as we got to the park, they made a beeline for the Kroger tent where they could decorate their own cookies! After spreading some frosting on a cookie and pressing it into sprinkles, they were ready for the next thing, which was spinning the prize wheel at the Visit Pittsburgh tent! Luckily they both won the same prize (a stuffed animal!) and then we took pictures in a cut out of Daniel Tiger’s Trolley! The park was full of fun activities like bouncy houses, kids yoga, and free carrousel rides! My kids love music so they spent the most time playing instruments with the Columbus Folk Music Society as they played fun versions of all their favorite kid songs! When the music was done, my husband met us for lunch and we each had a burrito from Tortilla, a Mexican restaurant conveniently located in the park. Of course, after lunch, we had to have Jeni’s ice cream – at which time I decided Salty Caramel is still my all time favorite flavor! Commons for Kids offers everything you need for a fun morning out with the kids: lots of free activities, a large green space to run around in and get their energy out and good food!

Katie Grace shares her insight below:

The Columbus Commons’ Food Truck Food Court is presented by Giant Eagle and runs every Thursday, May to October. It takes place from 11am-2pm, and consists of 10 of the best food trucks in Columbus. I was invited to go check it out with my family, and try out some delicious food! We parked in the Columbus Commons parking garage right next to where the food trucks park. As my family was scanning our choices of cuisine, I noticed how many of the tables were covered by shade – when you become a mom your brain automatically starts noticing these things. So even though it was a hot day, it was comfortable enough in the shade to enjoy hot food! My mom eyes also went right to the bathrooms, water fountains, and ATM for the trucks that only take cash. My husband opted for a burrito bowl from Tortilla, while I got a falafel pita from Pitabilities. Both of our meals were delicious, well priced, and well portioned. The only issue was running out of stomach space before we could try some of the other trucks! After our meal, we strolled our baby around the park and enjoyed watching some children play the lawn games Columbus Commons had set up in the grass. All in all, we had a really great experience checking out the Food Truck Food Court, and can’t wait to go back and try out some more of the trucks!

Watching a movie underneath the stars is a great way to spend a summer night.  The three movie dates have passed fo this summer so we’ll have to wait to see what makes the list next year.

Helen and her family enjoyed Honey I Shrunk the Kids:

How awesome is it that the City of Columbus provides us such amazing opportunities to make precious moments with our families? From the wonderful ticketed events that the Columbus Commons hosts, to the constant, free, family-centric activities that go on literally every week! Our family had a blast at Popcorn Pops and then enjoyed kicking back for the movie and relaxing on the lawn with our dinner and ice cream from Tortilla and Jeni’s. It’s not every city that cares this much about providing family-friendly experiences for its community. We are lucky to have you Columbus.
