Ohio Glamping Guide

2

June is national camping month and we wanted to introduce a new concept that puts a twist on this summer classic. “Glamping” is all the rage these days, whether it’s the DIY experience you can create with your own fancy tent, plush bed and bohemian chic decor or on an official “glampground”.

Glamping (v.) defined: a glamorous camping experience with all the comforts of home plus a little extra luxury. The idea of staying in a “yurt” in place of a tent or cabin derives from the Mongolian culture and is a hybrid of the aforementioned. A yurt is a nomadic-style structure that is made of stretched canvas over a wooden frame with a rounded top. From tree houses to yurts, below is a list of the top glampgrounds in Ohio if you want to give the trend a try this summer. Here are some cool adults-only and fun kid-friendly options for the kids and for the kids-at-heart:

1.) Nomad Ridge at the Wilds (Cumberland)

The Grand Yurt at The Wilds is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a secluded adults-only weekend getaway from the kiddos. You can stay in various private yurts (Woodland, Premium or Grand) depending on your budget. These yurts come with luxurious bedding, running water, bamboo floors, solid wood doors, ceiling fans, a private bathroom and an observation deck to see the wild animals. There are also romantic add-ons such as the Wildside sunset tour, a sunset horseback ride and breakfast/dinner for two. 24-hour concierge service is also available.

Price Range: $292-$425 per night (member and non-member pricing varies)

Address: 14000 International Rd., Cumberland, OH 43732

2.) Kelleys Island State Park (Kelleys Island)

Kelleys Island, known as Lake Erie’s Emerald Isle, is an exciting destination for nature enthusiasts, and a relaxing retreat for vacationers. Kelleys Island State Park features two family-friendly yurts that sleep up to six. Each yurt features an efficiency kitchen, private bathroom with shower and a furnished living/dining area.

Price range: $100 per night ($625 weekly rate)

3.) The Mohicans Treehouse (Glenmont)

You can choose from 3 amazing treehouses (Little Red, White Oak, Old Pine) designed by Kevin Mooney and Pete Nelson. Nelson is a professional tree house designer and star of the Discovery Channel’s hit TV series, “Tree House Masters.” They have received national recognition for their innovation and tree house sustainability features including passive solar, radiant heat, on-demand hot water and AC. Children are welcome and large groups can also be accommodated in large more traditional cabins, including the Mohican 15-guest cabin. The Grand Barn on site is an event facility that’s great for large events and weddings as well.

Price range: $250+ per night

Address: 22650 Vess Rd., Glenmont, OH 44628

4.) Salt Lake Retreats (Laurelville/Hocking Hills)

Within the Hocking Hills, Salt Creek Retreats features several cabins and one cute yurt that can comfortably sleep up to five. You also have the option of setting up tents outside of the yurt to accommodate large groups.  The no-frills yurt features bunk beds, a futon, a sun dome, a propane heater for winter use (October-April) and a solar shower (for summer use only.) Outside amenities include a large rock patio, a fire ring, a hammock, an outhouse, charcoal grill and a covered picnic table.  You are surrounded by 60 acres of natural woodland and they have a pet-friendly policy.

5.) Delaware State Park (Delaware)

Three yurts are available to rent at Delaware State Park in April-October. Each yurt features futon beds, a table and chairs, a cooler, ceiling fan, outdoor charcoal grill and a picnic table with a canopy. This is another great option for the nature enthusiast that doesn’t require a lot of frills, but don’t forget to leave your pets at home since there is a no-pet policy. The yurt sleeps 5 and you may set up one tent for a maximum of 8 people on the site.

Price Range: $40-$60 per night (seasonal and resident rates available)

Address: 5202 US Highway 23 N., Delaware, OH 43015

6. Getaway (Beaver Creek)

If you are looking to disconnect from technology, this is the spot for you. There are 38 cabins that are individually placed on a spot of land in a wooded setting on 58 private acres. It’s not tent camping so you do have amenities like a shower, so it’s a nice option for those that don’t want to completely rough it.

Getaway romantic cabinYour cabin will be close to others, but completely separate. The cabins are tiny but are stocked with all you need. You can even bring a dog and they have items like dog bowls for you. Another bonus is the cabins are new and clean!! The large window at the end of the cabin near the bed offers a picturesque view and have blinds that you can lower so the early morning sun doesn’t wake you. Each cabin has a fire pit area, chairs around and a table if you want to eat outside.
