A Columbus Mom’s Guide to the Month of May 2017

Happy May! It’s finally starting to warm up and we have so many fun activities for this month! Farmer’s Markets are starting up and Touch A Truck Events are rolling in! The end of the year is a busy time, but we hope you can squeeze in some of these great activities. Be sure to check back as activities are always being added.

May 1: Splash Pad Opening: 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. at Hilliard’s Station Park | This splash pad opened last summer and is a great spot for the kids to cool off. Here’s a list of Splash Pads in Columbus you’ll want to check out. The Worthington Lagoon is also now open! 

May 2: Rock the Blocks : 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at The Northwest Library in Worthington | Join your fellow building architects for some building fun! 

May 3: Wild Story Time: 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. at the Ohio Wildlife Center | Listen to a wildlife book with the theme of nature or animals. Visit with animal ambassadors, walk around the grounds and make a craft related to the story. $5 for adults and children 5 and under are free.

May 4: Spring Yappy Hour: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Scioto Audobon Metro Park | Join the friends at Scioto Audobon Metro Park and don’t forget your furry friend! Enjoy food trucks, beverages, and ice cream too! 

May 4- May 14: James and the Giant Peach: Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m.—Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.—Sundays at 3:00 p.m. | Don’t miss the multiple showings at the Columbus Children’s Theater.

May 4th: May the 4th Be With You!: 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at The Old Worthington Library | Princesses and scruffy-looking nerf herders are invited to celebrate this unofficial Star Wars Day with games and more! For ages 6-11.

May 4: COSI after Dark: 5:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m. | It’s COSI without kids! Geek out with grown-ups and explore COSI, enjoy special themed activities, and a cash bar. May’s theme is May the 4th Be With You.

May 4-6: Medea: The Classic Greek Tragedy will be presented at Dublin Coffman High School. Be sure to check their website for more information! 

May 5: Powell Touch a Truck11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. | Enjoy a day of climbing, pretending, and touching different trucks at Adventure Park. There will be over a dozen vehicles at the park for your kiddos to explore and learn about! 

May 5: Family Fishing Day Westerville: 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. | Come out to Everal Barn for their annual Family Fishing Day! Limited poles are available, please bring your own if you have them. They will provide all of the bait. You do not need a license to fish here. Children 10 and under must have a parent accompany them. $5 per person fishing. Please pre-register!

May 5: Cinco De Mayo Parent’s Day at the Worthington Pool: 6:00 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. | Parents deserve a night out too! Kids will have tacos for dinner, swimming and a movie. The event is only $10 per child. 

May 5-6: Grease: 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. | New Albany High School will present the school version of Grease! 

May 5-7: Shen Yun: times vary each day at Ohio Theatre | This is a mesmerizing and fascinating performance. Be aware children under five are not permitted and there is a dress code of evening or business attire.

May 5-14: Anne of Green Gables: CATCO and Columbus School for Girls will present this show| Showtimes are Friday-Sunday with two showings most days (2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.) 

May 6: Worthington Farmer’s Market: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.Come out and celebrate the 30th anniversary of this wonderful farmer’s market! 

May 6: Green on the Green: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | Come to Worthington for the 8th annual Green on the Green Event that highlights green and healthy alternatives to everyday living. 

May 6: Home Depot Build a Flower Pot: 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. | Join the hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a flower pot to hold spring flowers to keep or give to Mom. All kids get to keep their project, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.

May 6: Spring Mini Market: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.Join us and 25+ local vendors to shop for the best handmade baby and kids items around! 

May 6-May 7: Central Ohio Music Festival: 10:00 a.m. at Battelle Darby Creek | Numerous concerts both days! This is a showcase of Young Musicians, dance instruction, and participation, plus free children’s activities starting at 11 a.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

May 6: Japanese Children’s Day Festivities: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.| The Worthington Historical Society presents Japanese Children’s Day Festivities at the Doll Museum. 

May 6: Tanger Outlets Touch a Truck: 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. | Calling kids of all ages! Join us for this Touch-A-Truck event at Tanger Outlets, in Jeffersonville. Come climb, honk, and explore a variety of trucks and vehicles from Jefferson Township Fire Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s office, Medflight and more! 

May 7: Mommy Mile: 8:00 a.m. | This unique run/walk celebrates the gift of motherhood and honors moms. Register today! Columbus Moms Blog will be at the event passing out some freebies.  Be sure to stop by our booth and say hello! 

May 7: Powell Street Market9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.| Various vendors and food trucks line the streets of Downtown Powell.

May 7: Sheep Shearing Day: 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Stratford Ecological Center | Stratford will provide visitors with a wooly experience when the resident sheep and llamas receive their annual shearing. 

May 7: Mother and Child Tea and Painting Party: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at AHA! A Hands-on Adventure | All materials are included for mother and daughter to paint an “Under The Sea” teapot just in time for Mother’s Day! 

May 9: Story Time on the Farm: 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Stratford Ecological Center | Come out and enjoy the animals and a story on the farm! Plan a picnic for afterward too! 

May 10: Motherhood: Navigating the Ups and Downs: 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at The Heit Center| Motherhood can be really hard! Join professional speakers and acknowledge our struggles that are often more alike than different! 

May 11: All American Youth Horse Show: 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the Ohio Expo Center | The 49th Annual All American Youth Horse Show will feature riding styles including Western, contest, reining, trail, hunters and jumpers.

May 12: Arts in Uptown: 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in Uptown Westerville | Stroll the streets for various art stations that are set up.

May 12: New Kids on the Block: 7:30 p.m. at The Schottenstein Center | Grab your best girlfriends for an old school night on the town! 

May 12-14: Riverdance8:00 p.m. on Friday — 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday —- 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday| CAPA presents this show for the 20th anniversary! 

May 13: No Child Wet Behind: 9:30 a.m. | Join other Columbus families for this great cause and a 5k run! 

May 13: Pickerington Touch A Truck: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | Bring your kids to enjoy a variety of big trucks, cars, engines and more.  You will be able to get up close to check out the big tires, ask questions about what each vehicle does, test the driver’s seat and even get your own driver’s license.

May 13: Celebrate Mom at the Franklin Park Conservatory: 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. | Make a flower pot for mom for Mother’s Day! 

May 13: DinoMight DinoFest: 11:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. at Franklin County Fairgrounds, Hilliard, Ohio | The goal is to bring together as many dinosaur costume characters as they can find under one roof to create a local, fun, and interactive experience for kids of all ages.

May 13: Sunrise Sanctuary Spring Fling: 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in Marysville, Ohio | One of the largest celebrations of the year, they can’t wait to welcome you to the farm. Enjoy food, fun, and friends where the animals come first.  ($10 for adults/$5 for children) Must pre-register.

May 14: Mother’s Day Celebration at the Zoo9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Columbus Zoo | Looking for the perfect gift for mom? Bring her to the zoo! All moms and grandmothers get in free with a paid child’s admission. 

May 14: Moments with Mom: 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at Emily Traphagen Park in Powell | Bring the family to enjoy activities that celebrate all Moms! Take a walk along the memory lane nature trail, create a Mother’s Day gift, plant a tree, and enjoy a picnic snack with Mom.

May 16: OMG Bookfest: 4:00 p.m. at Gramercy Books in Bexley​ | Meet best selling authors such Michael Buckley-The Sisters Grimm series, Alex London- The Wild Ones and 2 books in the 39 Clues series, Stuart Gibbs- Spy School and several other others.

May 17-May 21: OVO by Cirque Du Soleilvarious times at the Schottenstein Center | What a mesmerizing and incredible show! 

May 19: Touch a Truck Worthington: 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at The Worthington Community Center | The 6th Annual Touch a Truck is a unique and interactive event that allows children to see, touch, and safely explore their favorite big trucks and heavy machinery, as well as to meet the personnel who protect, serve, and build the Worthington community.

May 20: 25th Annual Komen Columbus Race for the Cure: 7:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | Be a part of the sea of pink as they celebrate 25 years! 

May 20: All Aboard for Railroad Fun: 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. at Trailhouse at Sandel Legacy Trail in Sunbury | Visitors can watch the trains while they learn about railroading and the development of the railroad industry in America. The Display, which is in HO scale, includes the trains and a miniature landscaped village and surrounding countryside.

May 20-May 21: Delaware Arts Festival: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sunday| This two-day event features over 180 booths! The event includes food, entertainment, and many children’s activities! 

May 20: Grove City Touch a Truck: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Grove City UMC | There will be a quiet break at 11:00 a.m. for children with sensitivity to sound and crowds. Don’t miss this fun event!

May 20: Praire Township Touch a Truck: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Praire Township Community Center | Come out to the Prairie Township Community Center and climb around in some of the vehicles that help keep the Township safe and running smooth.

May 20: Endangered Species Day with Ohio Wildlife Center: 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. at the Franklin Park Conservatory | Celebrate the opening of Topiaries at the Conservatory: Wild Wonders and National Endangered Species Day. At 11 a.m., meet animal ambassadors from Ohio Wildlife Center. From 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., learn about the endangered species of Ohio. Free with admission.

May 20-May 21: Farm Open House1:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Burnt Toast Farms in Marysville | Burnt Toast Farm will hold a FREE event that includes barn tours, lawn games, volleyball, sunflower seed planting, hay bale rides, alpaca meet and greet, fiber spinning demo, photo booth, wildflower picking, and property/barn tour. The event is on Saturday and Sunday.

May 20: The Little Mermaid: 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  New Albany Ballet presents this show for two showtimes. 

May 20: Water Safety Event4:00-6:00 p.m. at Goldfish Swim School- Dublin and Goldfish Swim School-Westerville | At the free events, children and families will receive information about ways to stay safer in and around the water this summer. Goldfish aims to educate families by calling attention to steps we can all take to prevent accidents from occurring. The events will include: water safety tips from Goldfish and safety professional, family swim with professional, certified lifeguards on duty, fire trucks and rescue personnel, water safety clinics, and kids entertainment.

May 21: Girls on the Run: 8:00 a.m. at the Columbus Commons | Join in the fun for a run that celebrates girls! There is also a kiddie fun run for kids 7 and younger. 

May 21: Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live: 1:00 p.m. at CAPA theater | Get ready for the ultimate playdate- 65 million years in the making- as Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live leads you on a breathtaking tour of pre-historic Australia. 

May 21: Concerts on the Green: 7:00 p.m. | These family-friendly concerts are FREE for everyone. All performances are held on the Northwest Quadrant of the Village Green in Worthington. The first concert is a band called Inversion and is a blues soul band.

May 21: Strawberry Fairy Tea Party: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. at Mitchell’s Berries LLC | Join the Berry Fairy for a Garden Tea Party on the farm. This event targets little girls and their favorite “big” girls. You’ll enjoy a manners lesson, a tale with Miss Spider and treats from the farm. 

May 25: Grandview Chocolate Walk: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Grandview Heights Public Library Enjoy a walking tour of Grandview Heights with chocolate stops at participating businesses, to benefit the GHPL Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

May 25: Party at the Creek Westerville: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Alum Creek Park | Explorations of nature, tours of scenic green spaces and waterways and family-friendly fun are the featured themes of Party at the Creek. Local nature and environmental groups will be on hand, boater safety demonstrations and canoeing, as well as food and entertainment will be part of the evening. 

May 26: Weekly Summer Kids Yoga: 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at Balancing Owl Yoga | Weekly kids yoga classes (ages 5-11). There is a small room for Kids Yoga and a larger room fro adult yoga. Go to their website to register! 

May 27: Peonies! Farm Pick Up Season Opener: 8:00 a.m at Red Twig Farm  | Make your own peony bouquet and meet the Red Twig Farms team. A variety of colors are available. Food trucks will be a part of the event too! 

May 27: All Ohio Reptile Show: 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Franklin County Fairgrounds | Come out and see all your reptile friends! 

May 27-May 29: Utica Ice Cream Festival: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.| Join Velvet Ice Cream each day over Memorial Day weekend in Utica, Ohio. There’s fun for the whole family, including contests for kids, ice cream eating contests, over 90 local artisans, pony rides, classic car show along with live entertainment. You won’t want to miss this! 

May 27: Air Dry Clay Animals at Franklin Park Conservatory: 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. | Get inspired by the animals of Topiaries at the Conservatory: Wild Wonders and create your own animal out of air dry clay. Free with admission.

May 28: Concerts on The Green: 7:00 p.m. | The Zach Whitney Show (Americana music) will perform in Worthington on The Green. These concerts are FREE for everyone. 

May 29: City of Powell Memorial Day Parade: 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.| The parade features more than 60 units! 

May 29: City of Worthington Memorial Day Parade: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. | The parade begins on East Dublin-Granville Road. 

May 29-June 4: Memorial Tournament: The tournament is a major PGA Tour event that features the best golfers in the world. Get your tickets and enjoy! 

May 30: Hilliard Farmers Market: 4:00-7:00 p.m.| Fresh produce all summer long!
