Three Months at Goldfish and We Love It

When my son, Xavier, had his first lesson at Goldfish, he couldn’t put his mouth or nose near water without swallowing a big mouthful. He couldn’t kick in the water, he couldn’t lay on his back, he couldn’t wade safely beyond the shallow edge of a zero-depth pool. I couldn’t even pour water on his head in the bath without gasps, eye rubs, and panic.

After three months at Goldfish, Xavier would rather live in the water than on dry land.

He happily lays on his back in the water, especially in the bath. He loves letting the water cover his ears in order to see how loud he can yell without hearing himself.

At the pool, he loves to don his goggles, take a deep breath, and swim to us. He throws toys to find below the surface. He confidently swims–with help–from one end of the pool to the other.

At Goldfish, he loves sitting on the edge of the pool, smiling and laughing with his classmates while another is swimming with the instructor.

Xavier has progressed to the third level in the Goldfish swim-skill progression. Each level has added incremental challenges, skills just tough enough to keep him practicing on his own and craving the next week’s lesson.

Xavier loves his swim instructors, too. Miss Sarah and Miss Maria were all smiles and high-fives at levels one and two. And his current instructor, Miss Camryn, is kind, funny, and supportive as Xavier challenges himself to swim farther and better.

I am amazed at the progress I have seen in three short months. I marvel at Xavier’s confidence, skill, and pure joy for swimming. I can only imagine his improvement (and his happiness!) another three months from now.
