Dear Columbus…Thank You…

2

Dear Columbus,

We met in the wee morning of April 27th, 2013. I first saw you on highway 70 heading from the east. I was leaving behind four years in Washington D.C. At that time I was 14 weeks pregnant with twins. I knew nothing about you. All I knew was that you would be the place that my husband and I would raise these two.

Being a new mom is terrifying. Being a new mom in a new city where you don’t know anyone or anything, it is even more terrifying.

So Columbus….Thank YOU…. from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for being Columbus and welcoming me with such open arms.

You make it simple to be a mom here.

Columbus, you are a show stopper with your amazing library system. The amount of free and educational programs for our children is sensational. Then you have our favorite children’s science museum and our sprawling zoo. Oh, and did I mention your beautifully planned city parks with bike trails throughout? We love the amount of ample green space and many fun summer fun splash pads. I thank you.

You make it easy for entrepreneurs to thrive. We adore all of your local play cafes throughout the Columbus suburbs. You have no idea how much us Columbus moms love these spaces. We appreciate those businesses for those days when we need a safe place for our kids to play.

Oh and how about your home brewed coffee shops? Columbus, you know how to pour a perfect cup.

Your parks and recreations programs in our city allow us to introduce children to so many activities without breaking the bank. Words cannot express our appreciation for all the events you put on for the children throughout the city for each and every season and holiday. THANK YOU!

Buckeye Nation is one of a kind. Thanks for being such a fun “college town.”  Our Columbus kids love game day. The “Best Damn Band in The Land” is our joy. Thank you for sharing the love of music with our children.

Then there are the nights that we want a break from being Mom and Dad. Thank you for having culture! We love the incredible restaurants, art, festivals and breweries. It makes us feel like we are in our early-20s again. I am grateful for all the options at our fingertips.

Even though my roots are not from the state of Ohio, my new life as “mom” has been cultivated here. You make my mom life fun.

It takes a village to raise a child…. It takes a city to form the child.

Thank you, Columbus, you have a bigger role than you will ever know.

Love,

A Columbus Transplant
