Get Out the Jogging Stroller – It’s Race Season!

RunwithFriends2The days are getting longer, the air is getting warmer, and your running shoes are calling to you from the bottom of the closet. This can only mean one thing – it’s time to break out the trusty-old Bob, because spring race season is upon us!

There’s nothing I love to do more at 6am on a Saturday or Sunday morning than get out on the streets with a couple hundred (thousand) of my closest friends and knock out a quick 5K/10K/13.1 miles before the rest of the day gets started. When my son was born, I couldn’t wait to take him in our fancy new jogging stroller for our first 5K and share my love of running with my new workout buddy.

The race I chose as our first mommy-son race was the Race for the Cure. Although it is a family-friendly event and they do allow strollers, there are so many runners (30,000+), if you are pushing a stroller, you might as well forget about running. Although a very worthwhile event, I was a little disappointed I didn’t get my calorie burn-on quite as well as I’d liked. (I’ll be taking the kids and participating again this year – but, I don’t have any expectations of running.)

To satisfy my running “bug” and ensure I was able to actually run in the races I was registering for, I began to look for the little-known community races that weren’t quite as busy as the “big dog” races. Bingo! Stroller racing dreams coming true!

Below is a list of family-friendly races in the Columbus area this spring you may not have heard about. Sure, they may not have the notoriety of the bigger races, but you’ll still have a great time and experience the adrenaline rush of race day – and maybe you’ll get a good calorie burn, too!
